TILT was engaged to design and construct an operable tiered sliding roof system for the outdoor deck and entertaining area for a residential property in Bronte, Sydney.
The retractable roof system was selected to allow sunlight into the inside living areas of the home with the flexibility to then prevent the hot western sun from entering in the summer time. The retractable roof size was 7.8m x 3m, consisting of two sliding panels approximately 3m x 3m each that concertina over a single fixed panel. The two sliding panels can be moved independently of each other, i.e. one or both panels can be opened, to enable flexibility in how the space can be used.
The retractable roof is constructed from a galvanised steel frame, the roof panels are insulated and clad with Colorbond on the top and Alucobond on the underside. The cladding materials were selected for their aesthetics, thin form and quality.
The roof is solar powered, using stepper motors which are powered by batteries charged by on-board solar panels. Operation of the roof is via remote control and integrated C-Bus home automation system.
