Bronte – Tiered Sliding Roof

TILT was engaged to design and construct an operable tiered sliding roof system for a residential outdoor deck and entertaining area in Bronte, Sydney.

TILT designed this retractable roof system to allow sunlight into the inside living areas of the home. The roof also provides flexibility to then prevent the hot western sun from entering in the summertime.

The retractable roof is 7.8m x 3m, consisting of two sliding panels approximately 3m x 3m each that concertina over a single fixed panel. The two sliding panels can be moved independently of each other (i.e. one or both panels can be opened) to enable flexibility in how the space can be used.

 

The roof is constructed from a galvanised steel frame, while the panels are insulated and clad with Colorbond on the top and Alucobond on the underside. The cladding materials were selected for their aesthetics, thin form and quality.

The roof is solar powered, using stepper motors which are powered by batteries charged by onboard solar panels. Operation of the roof is via remote control and integrated C-Bus home automation system.
