‘The New City Beautiful II’

TILT was commissioned to detail the design, construct and install the artwork ‘The New City Beautiful II’ by artist Nuha Saad. TILT worked closely with Nuha to ensure the artistic objectives were met whilst balancing the durability and materiality concerns of elements designed for the public domain.

This sculpture is the second public artwork for one large development site in Rosebery, supported by City of Sydney and funded by the Meriton Group. The first artwork The New City Beautiful I mural is located at Rothschild Avenue, Rosebery and was installed in 2017. The two artworks are sympathetic both conceptually and aesthetically to each other.

The New City Beautiful II is a free-standing sculpture that references the inherent historic features of local, long-gone architectural structures. Meanwhile, the work introduces a contemporary art aesthetic to the newly formed streetscape, further reiterating the future and lives to be lived there.

The colour and structure of the work act as a symbol for the many migrants of the past who were drawn to the area to live and work, while also acknowledging the contemporary movement of people who will come together to form the new Rosebery/Green Square communities.

The artwork consists of a pair of painted stainless steel fabricated elements mounted within a pre-cast concrete base. The vertical elements were carefully arranged in construction to reflect the original artistic concepts.

“Working with the team at TILT has been great – they have been able to take my concept design and make the artwork a reality.”
